The Creative Self-Portrait

The international magazine of art, culture, sustainable travel and creative photography Roman Walks presents

This workshop is designed to take your photography to the next level, breaking some traditional rules in learning, and stimulating the use of the right side of the brain. The goal is visual creativity, returning to observing reality with the disenchanted eyes of a child, in search of inspiration and intuition. And to discover the artist within us, to realize the perfect self-portrait.

Features

The workshop is based on innovative educational theories of Betty Edwards, in visual art, and the American photographer Minor White, in photography, aiming to represent yourself in a self-portrait as an effective way to start seeing what others are looking at, and to represent what is not seen.

Authors

Gabriel Rifilato (1955), a Roman journalist and photographer, is the author of this project together with the authoritative Image Factory of the magazine Roman Walks which includes the art historian Bruna Condoleo, the visual artist Floriana Cason, the photographer Roberto Scardoni and the journalist Virginia Rifilato. Permeated by magnetism and visual ambiguity, the photography of Gabriel Rifilato is nourished by a visionarity that enriches its exuberant creative vein with suggestive contents. A contamination of photographic aesthetics that borders on painting, theatrical scenography, literary narration, with the ambition to adhere to an experience of total art (Ars et Furor, Bruna Condoleo).

 Content

The self-portrait “at the mirror” is organized with two meetings of 6 hours each and represents the first phase of the workshop (basic level) which, in its integral project, is completed by the second phase (advanced level) dedicated to the study of the self-portrait with “vanitas” (still life).

Target

The workshop is open to all photographers, both beginners and experts, who are interested in experimenting with new forms of visual creativity. It is also aimed at enthusiasts who are eager to know the ductility and expressive power of photographic media, without any technical or technological dogma. The aesthetic aspects analyzed during the workshop, such as the study of the composition and the final scene shot “at the mirror”, also allow participants to participate with advanced cameras and smartphones.

Setting

The workshop takes place on a weekend in early October, with a 12-hour programme, spread over 6 hours on Saturday (theory and exercises) and 6 hours on Sunday (shots and review). The self-portrait at the mirror takes place outdoors, with natural light, and is set on the beach of Fregene, at the Levante chiringuito (5 and 6 October 2024). The self-portrait with vanitas takes place in a studio on a weekend at the beginning of November, and takes place at the Albergo Etico in Rome, near Piazzale Flaminio (2/3 November 2024).
